SUPERB LYREBIRD.

Superb Lyrebird(Male)

The Superb Lyrebird is well named for it is indeed superb and exotic.
This bird has so many interesting features. The male birds lyre-shaped tailed which it opens out and shakes during its courtship dance in front of the female,is unforgetable.
Lyrebirds have a reputation for being shy and difficult to find and indeed they are because of their vulnerability, particularly to human introduced animals such as cats and dogs and foxes.

Superb Lyrebird(Male)

In Sherbrooke Forest, close to Melbourne, their numbers have declined markedly because of increased housing development around the forest, bringing the attendant cats and dogs into the forest.
I have seen these birds cross the road in front of my car while driving up nearby Mount Donna Buang. They sort of half- fly and half- run and can move quite fast, but I imagine a hunting animal such as a large dog or feral cat, would soon tire them out and run them down.Nevertheless, their numbers seem to be increasing in the forests of south-eastern Australia away from human habitation. Incidently, their shyness does not apply to human beings, once they become familiar with them.A bird will sometimes walk through the middle of a bush-walking group.

Apart from their magnificent appearance, they have amazing powers of mimicry. They can accurately mimic any bird or sound a human might make-even chain-saws. A bird-watcher heard one mimic the sound of his camera shutter and film advance motor!

In the winter, particularly when it is raining,I often hear one in the bush behind my house. They have a distinctive
call of their own which resembles the metallic twanging noise of old bed springs. They probably venture down the mountain behind my property in search of food which consists mainly of leaf-mould animals such as earthworms and land prawns called 'yabbies' in Australia.
