SUPERB FAIRY WREN.

Suberb Fairy Wren(Breeding Male)

These little birds are one of my favourites. They are tiny too, only some kinds of finches are smaller.
Darting quickly around the garden in a group of between six and twelve, they would hardly be noticed without the brilliant blue colour of the dominant male standing out.
The females and the non-breeding males are a fawn-grey colour.Their movement is speedy but co-ordinated as if controlled by one mind (a feature of most bird types,I've found).

Superb Fairy Wren(Breeding Male)

If you are quiet and don't move suddenly in the garden they will dart around you quite close in their continual quest for small insects and seeds. Its then you can hear their voices; a sharp, tiny whistle going down in scale.
I usually only see them in the garden when the larger birds are absent.

To the right is one of the beautiful lithographs by John Gould the famous English ornithologist of the 19th century. He is chiefly remembered now for his superb drawings and sketches of Australian birds which were little known in the early 1800's.
