CURRAWONG.

Pied Currawong.

These birds are among my favourites and are nearly always resident in my garden. They are a large bird - a little smaller than the Crow and a little larger than the Magpie.
The Pied Currawong is common, but I also see a Grey Currawong sometimes.
Like the Crimson Rosellas,I feed the Currawongs every morning with the remains of my breakfast-porridge;plus some stale bread. They seem to be addicted to the porridge because if I am late with breakfast, one Currawong in particular will come and sit on the balustrade and pointedly watch me eat my breakfast.
Recently, I was so busy in my study I forgot about breakfast altogether , but the Currawongs had no intention of letting me forget. At about 11.30am, suddenly there was a loud noise of birds jumping up and down on the metal roof directly above my study. The Currawongs had found out where I was in the house and wanted to remind me about their breakfast!

The number of them in the garden varies.Sometimes there is only the one who insists upon his breakfast, but at other times such as during the mating season (September to March)I have counted 13 or 14.Their relationships are fairly tribal and from what I have read,a group has a main pair who will also mate with the off-spring of previous broods. I have also read that they will feed their young with the nestlings of other birds. Not very pleasant, but its a wild world out there.

Their appearence, especially close-up is a bit frightening with their piercing yellow eyes and long pointed beaks. They have the ability to move very quietly and its a bit disconcerting when in the garden to turn around and find one looking at you at close range. After observing birds all my life I am convinced that each type of bird is very aware of the effect they have on humans and enjoy having a bit of fun at our expense.

Though their appearence engenders respect among the other birds,I find that they get along fairly well with other species, usually. The magpies and Currawongs usually share the food I put out without rancor though in the past I have seen very speedy and vicious air-fights.
Currawongs have a variety of calls, but the sound I hear most frequently is a sort of loud 'guluk, guluk'with the second 'guluk' at a lower frequency.
